A practical framework for assessing the customer, project dependencies and next commercial step before an opportunity enters your active pipeline.
Qualifying a CCUS commercial opportunity
A project announcement can be a useful starting point for business development. To decide whether it belongs in your active pipeline, build a clearer picture of the customer, the stage of the project and the role your business could fulfil.
Start with a defined customer problem
Identify the industrial site, technology requirement or delivery challenge that makes the opportunity relevant. What is the customer trying to achieve? Who owns the commercial decision? What evidence would they need before involving a supplier or partner?
For a technology provider, these questions help shape a targeted proposition. For an engineering or service business, they help identify where its capabilities would fit within the project team.
Map the dependencies
A useful assessment looks beyond the capture equipment. Ask how the opportunity connects with energy and utility requirements, project finance, relevant policy support and the proposed route for carbon dioxide transport, storage or utilisation.
Record which assumptions are supported by evidence, which remain under discussion and who can clarify them. Technical and regulatory questions should be taken to the appropriate specialists.
Agree the next commercial step
A qualified opportunity should have a clear reason for engagement and an actionable next step. That might be an introductory discussion with the project team, a request for technical information or a review of potential delivery partners.
Keep the account owner, source date, outstanding questions and next action visible in the pipeline. This helps a commercial team judge when to progress, monitor or pause an opportunity.
