Questions to clarify industrial demand, buying requirements and delivery relationships when assessing a hydrogen opportunity.
Starting hydrogen market development with the customer
When assessing a hydrogen market, begin with a specific customer application. A broad view of the sector can identify areas of interest, but an actionable commercial plan needs a clearer understanding of who would buy, what they require and how an opportunity could progress.
Define the application
Ask what process or use the customer is considering and what is driving the discussion. Is the priority emissions reduction, an operational requirement, a future investment decision or a combination of factors?
Record the customer’s questions about supply, specification, delivery and timing. Agree which issues require engineering or other specialist input before a commercial proposition can be assessed.
Identify the buying and delivery roles
Map the organisations that could be involved in production, supply, infrastructure, equipment and industrial use. Within the customer organisation, identify the people responsible for operations, procurement, investment and commercial approval.
This creates a more useful engagement plan than a general list of companies interested in hydrogen. It also helps clarify where a potential partner would add value and which responsibilities remain unresolved.
Build evidence through focused discussions
Prepare each discussion around a small set of questions. What is the decision under consideration? What information is missing? Who needs to be involved next? What would justify committing further time?
Record the answers and distinguish expressions of interest from opportunities with defined requirements and next actions. Update the market plan as customer evidence develops.
