How to assess the fit of a funding call before committing to application preparation or consortium development.

Screening industrial decarbonisation funding opportunities

Finding a relevant funding call is the start of an assessment. Before committing to an application, establish whether the opportunity fits the organisation, project stage and work that needs to be funded.

Read the specific call requirements

Start with the funder’s current guidance. Check who can apply, the activities supported, the delivery geography and the expected project stage. Record the deadline, required partners and any questions that need clarification from the funder.

A familiar scheme name or a similar previous call is not enough to establish eligibility. Build the assessment around the requirements of the particular opportunity.

Check the practical commitment

Consider the time needed to prepare the submission, the information available and the responsibilities of each partner. Review any funding contribution, eligible-cost rules, payment conditions and reporting requirements stated in the guidance.

Identify gaps before application preparation begins. A shortlist is more useful when it explains why an opportunity fits, what remains uncertain and what action is needed next.

Make a clear decision

Record a decision to progress, seek clarification, monitor or set the opportunity aside. Revisit that decision when the project or the funder’s requirements change.

Chameleon can help identify relevant calls, assess initial fit and map potential partnership routes. Application preparation requires an agreed scope, and neither an initial fit assessment nor an application guarantees funding.
